ENDO SENNYO
CALLIGRAPHER

Calligraphy is the art of writing decorative characters on Japanese paper with a brush and ink. Having studied this artform since childhood, Endo Sennyo is ever pushing the boundaries in pursuit of a freedom that does not exist in traditional calligraphy - a liberation of expression through the incorporation of novel artistic techniques. Endo's works are characterized by their highly stylistic diversity, with some utilizing unconventional materials such as acrylic paints or mineral pigments in place of traditional sumi ink, and rollers instead of brushes. Her art is a powerful manifestation of what lies "within" at any given moment.

匠(TAKUMI)

Phoenix: This work was inspired by the Chinese character for "phoenix" in the Oracle bone script – the oldest attested form of written Chinese. The piece was painted on cement using a roller dripping in ink.
