FUKUMOTO SHIGEKI
DYEING ARTIST
Despite being born in Kyoto to a family of Japanese clothing dyers, dyeing artist Fukumoto Shigeki studied Western painting at university before embarking on his successful art career. Fukumoto uses a technique called ‘nuno zogan,’ in which the back of fabric is lined with Japanese washi paper, cut into pieces, and reconstructed by pasting the pieces back together without gaps to produce dynamic works that create different impressions depending on the light and angle from which they are viewed. His works of art use traditional Japanese techniques to express the highly polysemic "ambiguity" of the Japanese language, and are highly acclaimed in the world of contemporary art.
