TOTO AKIHIKO
KARAKAMI ARTIST

Decorative ‘karakami’ paper was once used on sliding doors and as wallpaper in Japanese houses. Toto Akihiko inherited the traditional technique of copying patterns onto washi paper by hand using Hangi(woodblock), transforming karakami into an art form. His deep “Toto Blue” karakami respects the ancient Japanese view of the world, in which people believe that gods exist everywhere or inhabit all things, yet he has also developed his own unique world view.
